Established as the Committee for Energy Awareness, it became the U.S. Council for Energy Awareness in 1987. Absorbed the American Nuclear Energy Council and the Nuclear Management and Resources Council and assumed its present name in 1994. In July 1987, the Atomic Industrial Forum was merged with the Council. NEI's mission is to ensure the formation of policies that promote the beneficial uses of nuclear energy and technologies in the United States and around the world. Members consist of utilities, manufacturers of electrical generating equipment, researchers, architects, engineers, labor unions, milling and mining companies, constructors, laboratories, educational institutions and government agencies with interest in the generation of electricity by nuclear power. Membership dues vary, based on type of company.
